AMD makes loss of $1.77bn

Last year's purchase of ATI has affected the chip maker's earnings

Written by Neon Kelly

AMD made losses of $1.77bn (£904m) in the final quarter of the year, a significant slip on the loss of $576m (£294m) in the last period of 2006.

The results include charges totalling $1.67bn (£873m), largely relating to the company's acquisition of chipmaker ATI last year. Without the purchase costs, AMD's losses total $97m (£50m).

Quarterly revenue was $1.77bn (£904m), matching the figure from the same period of 2006.

AMD chief fianancial officer Robert Rivet remained optimistic.

“We were close to break-even operationally for the quarter, reducing our fourth quarter non-GAAP operating loss to $9m (£4.5m)," said Rivet.

“We shipped a record number of microprocessor units in the quarter, including nearly four hundred thousand quad-core processors.”
