Chip giant Intel has announced a major reorganisation of its business, including the creation of a channel products group to serve its worldwide channel.
Intel previously had two main manufacturing arms: an architecture division for microprocessors and chips, and a communications division for networking, wireless and internet products.
The two arms will now be split into five units: a mobility group, a digital enterprise group, a digital home group, a digital health group and the channel products group.
The channel group, led by vice-president Bill Siu, who previously worked on Intel's desktop platforms, will develop and market products for customers in specific geographic markets.
Paul Otellini, chief operating officer of Intel, said in a statement: "Each operating unit has the autonomy to allocate computing and communications resources to be successful, making Intel's entire structure consistent with our platform products strategy.
"Intel is putting the people and resources in place to sharpen our focus on the development of platforms that meet the demands of our customers."
Intel said it plans to provide a technical training session for the channel to educate about 900 integrators on its mobile platforms, including the upcoming Sonoma platform.
Intel announced just weeks ago that system builders have taken the lead in developing new notebooks around the Sonoma chipset.
Martin Breffit, director at reseller a-sure technologies, said: "Intel hasn't focused on the channel effectively before and AMD has taken a fair bit of market share as a result. Intel now recognises the need to use the channel to reach the right markets."
