FujiFilm is clamping down on firms selling counterfeit versions of its Quantum and LTO storage data tape products.
The offending tapes, explained FujiFilm, have been wiped clean, packaged as new and, in some cases, found to be at least 10 years old.
The vendor said it has seized “large quantities” of the counterfeit tapes on their way into the country in recent months and had already taken legal action against channel firms selling them on.

Roger Moore, strategic business manager of recording media at FujiFilm, warned that the low quality of the data tapes could spell trouble for end users.
Moore said: “In the opinion of our engineers, it would be dangerous for customers to write any data to the tapes, let along rely on them for backup.”
“We have therefore sought a number of undertakings against companies who have been found to be carrying out these activities and have successfully claimed significant damages and costs, which have been settled out of court, with all FujiFilm demands being met.”

Fujifilm takes action on counterfeit traders
My understanding of the Fujifilm UK position is that the tapes which were found to be used / second-hand / counterfeit were detected and intercepted at a number of locations in the UK. The goods were being traded from one dealer to another until Fujifilm UK acted.
