SMEs can now afford telepresence technology

Telepresence vendor Lifesize has responded to Tandberg’s recent high end telepresence launch by creating an affordable telepresence solution for resellers to offer SMEs.

Lifesize has created a product bundle, to be distributed by Touchline Video, comprising three Lifesize cameras, three codecs and a Lifesize conference phone.

With the addition of three 60in high-definition (HD) monitors and a 50in HD data monitor, this is a match for the Tandberg offering at a fraction of the price, claimed Lifesize country manager Ray Kenny.

“It is a more affordable price, but still offers a large margin,” he said.
Since a typical telepresence offering could cost from £25,000, said Barry Cross, managing director of Touchline Video, the channel needs to extend the horizons for this technology beyond the banking sector and global enterprises.

Smaller businesses can now afford telepresence technology, he claimed. He added that this will also allow enterprises to upgrade their videoconferencing systems more cost effectively.

“Many big companies might have already invested in boardrooms, so they do not want to ditch that investment to have to refit an entire telepresence suite,” Cross added.

Telepresence is more than just a nice codec and some big screens

If you're spending 10s of thousands of pounds on a telepresence solution by Lifesize, Tandberg (or, indeed, anyone else) you want to make sure that the room is set up well to properly exploit the equipment and take into account lighting, seating, layout, etc.

Most boardrooms are long, thin rooms with a single large boardroom table and moveable chairs. As such, they are really not the optimal shape/layout for a true telepresence system; they're much better suited to a traditional room system.

If you want to do true telepresence (rather than just have a couple of cameras and a few big displays) then do it properly; otherwise you really won't get good quality or anything like real value-for-money. Simple issues like people sitting slightly out-of-shot or slightly too far away from the mic will massively degrade the end user AV experience compared to what could be achieved with a proper set-up.

A proper telepresence set-up makes it hard for even novice VC users to "get it wrong".

Put simply, "Don't spoil the ship for a ha'penneth of tar"
