Norris: we may not ever commit to buying [our servers] from one distributor

HP has given its full backing to Ingram Micro after the broadliner closed its purchase of Computacenter Distribution (CCD).

The move, which was first announced on 27 October, will mean Ingram has access to HP’s full enterprise server, storage and networking (ESSN) range. Some 40 CCD staff will join Ingram’s UK Enterprise Server and Storage division in Maidenhead as part of the move.

Following its exit from volume PC and printer distribution, CCD’s business revolved around HP’s server portfolio.

Kevin Matthews, HP UK and Ireland channel manager, said the acquisition would allow Ingram to deliver the vendor’s converged infrastructure message.

“In purchasing CCD, Ingram Micro has taken on an experienced team with a history of working closely with HP over many years,” he said.

“The combination of this expertise and Ingram Micro’s effective sales and marketing teams should enable the HP enterprise portfolio to reach a wide audience.”

Ingram said it had been working hard with CCD to ensure there is a “smooth transition”, with service levels maintained from the first day. It also stressed that CCD’s business relationships will continue to be maintained with current contracts.

Alain Maquet, president of Ingram Micro EMEA, said: “This acquisition is a strong complement to our existing UK business, and it further advances our EMEA strategy to expand into the value business.”

The only unanswered question now is where Computacenter will source its HP servers from, now that it no longer has a distribution arm.

Speaking to CRN earlier this month, Computacenter chief executive Mike Norris suggested that the corporate reseller would keep its options open.

“I do not think we will ever announce that we are committed to buy from one distributor,” he said.
