A lack of channel education is to blame for the fact most UK organisations have yet to implement email archiving, research has suggested.

49 per cent of the 408 UK IT managers questioned in an independent poll commissioned by GFI Software said they have fully implemented email archiving.

However, GFI expressed concern that lack of education is the primary inhibitor for the 51 per cent of firms yet to make the move, with 32 per cent of those surveyed perceiving it as unnecessary to their needs or feeling too ill-informed to purchase.

28 per cent cited budget restraints as the main reason for not purchasing.

David Vella, GFI’s director of product management, said the results highlighted the huge potential for resellers to boost email archiving sales.

“It is clear that there is a degree of education required in the market and that despite the clear benefits that many are seeing, the lack of appreciation of the utility of email archiving is concerning,” he said.

“Resellers now have a unique opportunity to inform their target customer base of the benefits they are missing out on, and perhaps more importantly, the risks they are running by failing to implement these safeguards."

Email archiving is starting to move into SME

Intersting article, i've offered email archiving for a while though it's only really started to pick up during the last couple of years in the SME space, previously i've felt that it was very much an enterprise-only solution though more and more companies are realising how important it is...article like this only highlight the fact that there's a lot of opportunity in the area...awareness amongst customers is slowly starting to build...within 2-3 years i estimate the market will lose it's buzz...though until then....gold rush :)

Archiving needed for compliance

Clearly, there is a big upside for resellers and channel partners to add email archiving solutions to their bag of solutions. Besides the obvious convenience of being able to go back and find important information from years ago, one thing that can't be overlooked--both in the UK and in the US--is that archiving is becoming increasingly relevant to compliance with both internal and external policy mandates. Just last month, the NARA (US) issued guidelines for archiving at the Federal level. This is a technology that can no longer be ignored, and resellers that jump on this bandwagon are going to have a valuable opportunity in their hands.
