UK SME retailers are continuing to turn to e-commerce to bolster sales, with over a third now operating online outlets.
Thirty-five per cent of the 277 SME retailers questioned in a recent survey by e-commerce vendor Actinic said they now have an e-commerce web site, compared with 11 per cent in 2006.
Of those that did not, 22 per cent claimed they have firm plans to launch one.

The survey, which was carried out by pfa Research, also found the number of small retailers taking orders via post or telephone had increased from 39 to 74 per cent in the same period.
One in 10 now sell via a major market place such as eBay and Amazon and 66 per cent said their web site was profitable.
But a quarter (26 per cent) said they have lost money as a result of online fraud.
Chris Barling, chief executive of Actinic, said: “Times are tough for retailers so I’m sure that the take-up of e-commerce will be significant in 2009 as it is the only channel where profits and growth are still on the up.
“However, the use of integrated software applications across multiple channels is still limited to a minority of retailers, so there is a clear market here.”
