Computacenter (CC) is capitalising on the growing pressure for businesses to take stock of their environmental responsibilities by launching a Green IT Advisory Service.

According to CC, the service will help companies comply with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment and the Restriction of Hazardous Substances directives, as well as offering an energy-efficiency audit of a company’s IT environment. Other offerings will include a carbon footprint for the lifecycle of a typical PC and educating employees to think green by switching off IT equipment when not in use.

Heidi-Lynn Mitchell, product services director at CC’s hardware business unit, told CRN: “My team is responsible for the new service, but we will also work with CC’s account managers and technical staff. We are breaking new ground with this service. Nobody else is helping corporate IT users tackle this crucial issue in the same way.”

Asked if companies will actually pay for this type of service, Mitchell said: “Absolutely. Corporates realise that this is important. We’re trying to make it easy for IT directors to improve the energy consumption of their IT equipment. We’ve run it past a number of customers already and they’ve all been interested.”

Jon Godfrey, managing director of asset management firm Life Cycle Services, said: “Organisations have to consider IT as a key part of their environmental footprint. The fact that CC has grasped this with both hands is a warning to less progressive resellers. It is also a wake-up call to the channel that they will miss out if they don’t start offering environmental services.”
