Hot spots for IT jobs next year will be banking, software and telecoms, according to the latest survey from The IT Job Board.
The organisation questioned more than 120 IT professionals across the UK to gather their thoughts and predictions on the year ahead.
A total of 48 per cent of respondents believed that banking would be the principal sector, despite well documented problems this year. A further 42 per cent picked software and IT services, with 41 per cent opting for telecoms as their top sector.
Peter Healey, sales director at The IT Job Board, said: “I believe that next year the finance sector will really pick up. Banking was the first to be hit during the recession, but it will also be the first to recover and it will offer a lot of opportunity in terms of IT recruitment.”
In addition, 34 per cent of those questioned thought project manager roles would be the most prevalent next year, with the same percentage opting for business analyst jobs. Some of the most sought-after skills next year will be .net, SAP, Java and web development, according to respondents.
Healey added: “2010 will see a great deal more project management roles coming through, as companies embark on new IT projects. Testing and development roles, which were heavily affected in 2009, will also increase next year.”
A total of 58 per cent felt that contract jobs will be in greater demand in 2010 compared with permanent positions. According to Healey, the second half of 2009 saw a shift from permanent to contract roles, as companies sought greater flexibility.
“IT is now a fundamental part of business, and companies cannot afford to cut it," he said. "In recent months, we have experienced a real uplift in the number of vacancies being advertised on our site. I think the sector is through the worst.
“Job boards should be looking to support candidates through offering as wide a choice as possible. They also need to take the lead with recruiters, encou raging them to be as transparent and proactive as possible.”
