Spending spree?

This really is a year for doom and gloom isn't it?

But despite the talk of yet another recession - I ask did we ever come out of the first one?

Prices are rising so fast on everything from food to utility bills these days that it is becoming increasingly difficult to keep track, and unfortunately the only thing not rising in line with everything else is wages.

The 20 per cent VAT rate doesn't really help either.

I'm looking forward to an eight per cent rise in my rail fare this year - so worth the money.

So with the CBI's latest claims, I ask - is it really that much of a surprise?

According to the CBI, High Street stores are facing some of the worst trading conditions for 40 years, with the threat of a consumer spending collapse tipping the UK "back into recession". Back? Really?

It is no wonder people are not spending in the high street - it costs too much to get there for a start due to either over-priced fuel, or expensive public transport, then if you do get there, prices are ridiculously high as well.

Personally I do all my shopping online now because I know I will get a better deal. Until prices come down, I will not be heading to my local town centre either.

At least in the business world we have learned that the only way to get customers spending is to provide real value for money.

Until that is passed on at High Street level - this cycle is set to continue.
