Yirrell: No news from Dell isn't good news

What the Dell is going on?

Most of our readers will now be aware that there are some pretty large changes afoot within Dell’s UK channel structure.

Written by Sara Yirrell

As we reported on Channelweb on Monday, Dell UK channel director Andy Dow has left the company, although there has been no formal statement of confirmation from the vendor itself.

The rumours that are flying around the channel at the moment are varied, but there is a growing sense of panic about exactly what Dell is planning to do next.

I could not possibly print some of the rumours we have heard because I do not believe in fuelling any mass hysteria, but I have to say that I am disappointed in Dell’s continuing lack of response to what are reasonable questions.

Instead of holding its metaphorical hands up and telling the channel press, and consequently the channel, exactly what is going on, Dell has chosen to take the silent route, which just fans the flames.

This is the problem when a vendor is a US behemoth: the cogs in the publicity machine are very slow to react and because of the distance, the powers that be do not always understand the implications of this kind of response.

I’m sure Dell is not deliberately being obstructive and am convinced it will not suddenly undo all the work it has done with the channel.

I just really hope we can speak to Dell soon and get all the questions cleared up once and for all.
