Anti-counterfeit tools level the playing field

Microsoft launches much vaunted web initiative after 10-month pilot

Written by Laura Hailstone

Microsoft has finally launched its anti-counterfeit web initiative after piloting the scheme for the last 10 months (CRN, 31 January).

Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) 1.0 will make it mandatory for users to authenticate their new Windows software. Users have to download an ActiveX control that checks the authenticity of their Windows software and, if validated, stores a special download key on the PC for future verification.

Alex Hilton, anti-piracy manager at Microsoft, said: “This is great for the channel. Resellers I have spoken to say the best thing Microsoft can do is to make sure that everyone is selling from the same platform. WGA helps to create a level playing field by enabling customers to identify if their software is illegal.

“If customers fail the validation process, because their software is illegal, then they can get a replacement product from Microsoft, as long as they provide us with certain criteria. We would need to know where they purchased the ‘illegal’ software so that we can investigate.”

Hedley Corcoran, sales manager at VAR Midland Computers, said: “WGA helps businesses such as mine because it levels the playing field for honest partners as it makes policing illegal software a lot easier. The software and access to Microsoft’s download tools help us discern the genuine product we sell from the counterfeit products we compete with.”
