Patchlink jubilant with IDC rankings position

Vendor tops the charts for second year in a row

Bullish vulnerability management vendor Patchlink has claimed its top ranking in the patch management space by analyst IDC will help drive business through the channel.

The vendor came top of the charts for the second year in a row in the patch and remediation sector of IDC’s Worldwide Threat Management Software 2006-2010 report, with a 14.4 per cent global market share. Second was relatively unknown vendor Shavlik Technologies with 11.6 per cent and third was Microsoft with 9.3 per cent of the market.

Charles Kolodgy, research director at IDC, said in a statement: “Enterprises understand that they need to remove known vulnerabilities through patching and configuration setting, thus this segment is the fastest growing among all the security management sub-markets.”

Andrew Clarke, senior vice-president international at Patchlink, said: “The security vulnerability management space is going through a growth period thanks to compliance issues, constant threats and government regulations, but also one of consolidation. Receiving this kind of feedback from an industry analyst is a great endorsement and we have had a lot of enthusiasm from our partners as a result, because it helps to drive products into the channel.”

David Ellis, director of e-security at Patchlink distributor Computerlinks, agreed.

“Patchlink has all its ducks in line and is positioned to capitalise on the growth in the vulnerability market,” he said. “It is also a great opportunity for our resellers, particularly those that are a bit entrepreneurial and have put the time and effort into preaching the benefits of this technology to their customer base. End-users are always looking for independent information on how viable a vendor is, so this type of result is positive news.”
