C2000 hopes to AVIT with new AV division

Distributor separates AV and peripherals business to sharpen focus on smaller resellers

Computer 2000 (C2000) is in the process of splitting its audiovisual (AV) and peripherals business to create a separate AV division.

The new division, called AVIT, will officially launch on 1 May and be headed up by Darren Sainsbury who joined C2000 last month as head of AV, replacing Mike Davies.

Speaking to CRN, Sainsbury said: “The AV side of C2000 has not taken off as we had hoped because it has sat in the peripherals division and had just one person looking after it. AV needs a bit of specialism so we feel making it into a separate division is the best thing to do.”

The division will have a dedicated team of eight staff and will handle projectors, large-format displays, digital signage, LCD TVs and associated accessories. Sainsbury said three new vendors are in the pipeline.

The name AVIT is not new to C2000 as the distributor has used it for marketing branding purposes.

“I liked the AVIT logo and thought it summed up exactly what we want to offer so decided to turn it into an actual division,” said Sainsbury, who revealed he is initially looking to target smaller resellers.

“We’re not going to be big and brash and say we’ll take on Midwich. We’ll create our own reseller base. There are a lot of smaller resellers that get blown out of the water and I think they deserve a chance.”

Darren Lewitt, commercial manager at Midwich, said: “C2000 will never be thought of as an AV distributor as its IT business is just so huge. However, there is a place for C2000 in the AV market place and I think it is a good strategy for it to go after smaller resellers.”
