PCA supports ITACS' WEEE campaign

The Professional Computing Association has thrown its weight behind the campaign to counter the effect of the recycling directive on smaller firms

The Professional Computing Association (PCA) has added its support to the campaign to fight the crippling effect the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive will have on smaller UK firms.

Last week the Federation of Small Businesses and the National Association of Specialist Computer Retailers (NASCR) threw their weight behind the initiative, which is being spearheaded by the Independent Trade Association of Computing Specialists (ITACS). The PCA revealed to CRN that it too was supporting the campaign.

"I think it's great ITACS is being so active on this; it needs the channel to get together on this and I am encouraging all members of the PCA Reseller Committee, which includes ITACS, NASCR, the Network Buying Group and Brigantia, to support the initiative," said Keith Warburton, chief executive of the PCA.

Hendy Armstrong, founder of ITACS, said: "ITACS welcomes the support of the
whole industry that the PCA brings to the campaign. It is a campaign
for all independents, suppliers and producers to independents, and with more weight, perhaps the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) might start responding."

As CRN went to press Armstrong was still awaiting a formal response from the DTI to a letter he sent in mid-April outlining the concerns of ITACS members over the WEEE legislation.

"I actually spoke to the director of sustainable development and regulation at the DTI at the end of April who informed me that I would get a formal response back from the DTI's head of policy. I am still awaiting this response, " said Hendy.
