Vendors clash over DDR3 market

Corsair and Kingston prepare for battle with DDR3 DRam memory modules

Written by Martin Lynch

Corsair and Kingston Technology are going head-to-head with the launch of high-performance double data rate 3 (DDR3) DRam memory modules.

Corsair has just launched what it claims is the world’s fastest DRam memory with the introduction of the Twin3X2048-1600C10D Dominator. The memory is targeted at the performance and enthusiast PC market and is rated at 1.6MHz, while it is also shipping some 1.33MHz products. The company has also previewed some forthcoming Dominator modules running at 2MHz, which will be available in 1GB and 2GB capacities. All of the modules have been developed to support the new Intel P35 and X38 Express platforms.

The DDR3 modules operate at lower voltages than existing DDR2 modules, but deliver better performance. A larger pre-fetch allows far more data to be available to the processor immediately, resulting in faster application access.

Jack Peterson, vice-president of marketing at Corsair, said: “Corsair is supporting the industry’s transition to DDR3 with a full line of highly-engineered memory solutions. Our partnerships with leading suppliers have allowed us to be first-to-market with the world’s fastest production DDR3 memory and demonstrating our next generation Dominator running at 2GHz.”

Steve Peterson, director of chipset and graphics marketing at Intel, said: “The enthusiast community demands solutions that push the envelope and are capable of delivering the highest level performance experience, and very fast DDR3 is the next step in delivering cutting-edge computing.”

Kingston has also released its performance DDR3 DRam line-up with the HyperX 1.37MHz and ValueRAM 1.06MHz modules. It also plans to release ValueRAM 1.3MHz DDR3 modules to coincide with X38 motherboards arriving later this summer. The new modules are available in 512MB, 1GB and 2GB capacities.

Mark Tekunoff, senior technology manager at Kingston, said: “Kingston has been working closely with Asus, Gigabyte and other top motherboard manufacturers in our HyperX DDR3 testing process. We successfully screened and yielded production quantities of DDR3 memory at 1375MHz, giving technology early adopters the opportunity to test drive the newest motherboards at some of the highest performance levels available.”
