Microsoft: Online store no threat to partners

Software behemoth says partners can only benefit from its decision to sell a broad range of consumer software directly through Microsoft Store

Written by Doug Woodburn

Microsoft claims it remains “absolutely committed” to its UK retail channel - despite launching a new online store enabling consumers to download a broad range of software directly.

Software including Vista, Office, Works and Expression will be available via electronic download from 'Microsoft Store' from launch and will be extended to full packaged product (FPP) later this year.

However, the vendor claimed the store’s launch would complement its existing retail channel partners.

Following rigorous testing of the customer experience, the store’s electronic delivery platform (ESD) will be made available to partners in the future, the vendor stressed, allowing them to offer Microsoft product via ESD to their own customer base.

Alex Reeve, Business Group director at Microsoft UK said: “The way that consumers use technology is changing radically, but so too is the way that they acquire it. Our goal is to offer a seamless, intuitive service to consumers who want to obtain our software products from Microsoft. However Microsoft remains absolutely committed to its investment in the retail partner channel.”

“End customers are now demanding a higher level of online interaction prior to purchase. Many consumers require interaction with manufacturer and publisher, not only for the supply of information but in some cases to purchase products. Microsoft Store is a new addition to the existing channels already provided giving consumers ultimate choice."
