Komplett flees 'difficult' UK market

Pan-European etailer says cheerio to the UK and will now focus on its core markets

Written by Doug Woodburn

One of Europe’s largest etailers, Norway-based Komplett, has pulled out of the UK, citing stiff competition.

The IT reseller, slapped a notice up on komplett.co.uk earlier this week informing UK customers they can no longer use the website to make purchases.

Komplett, which competed against the likes of dabs.com and Misco in the UK, has also pulled its web presence in Germany, France and Austria and will now focus on markets in which it has a direct presence.

Speaking to CRN, chief executive Ole Vinje said the four markets accounted for less than 1 per cent of Komplett’s total revenues.

“In the last 12 months we have used very little effort in the UK as we found the competition was very strong and the market is difficult. We want to focus on the markets in which we are present and have a fair market share.”

Vinje added that existing UK customers will still be supported as usual from the Netherlands.

Komplett, which is listed on the Oslo stock exchange, saw revenues in May increase by 35 per cent year-on-year to NOK319.1m (£31.8m).

But Vinje said: “We are still a Norwegian company and have limited resources to do something big in these markets.”

Komplett’s web shops in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands and Ireland will remain up and running.
