Mobile network operator T-Mobile is predicting an influx of new customers following the launch of a range of improvements to its mobile broadband portfolio.

The firm is confident of quadrupling its UK user base in 2008 after becoming the first UK operator to deploy HSUPA (High Speed Uplink Packet Access) technology on a nationwide basis today. As a result users will experience a five-fold improvement in the time it takes to upload photos and videos to web sites.

T-Mobile has also upgraded the download capability of the HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access)-enabled 3G network to 7.2 Mbps – initially within the M25, but rolling out to other UK cities during the second half of 2008.

Other sweeteners include discounts for customers signing up for the Mobile Broadband Plus 24-month tariff and the firm has reduced its data roaming charges down to £1.50 per Mbyte, allowing for more affordable internet access while travelling in European Union member countries. Business customers are being offered the option of trialling the service before making a commitment.

Jim Hyde, T-Mobile UK chief executive, said: “Mobile broadband has come of age. Today, 25 per cent of new contract customers are signing up and we expect to quadruple our user base in 2008. We knew mobile broadband would burst on the scene and our continued investment in new technology is paying dividends for customers seeking a fast, consistent service which offers great value.”
