Motorola has bolstered its wireless LAN security credentials by announcing a definitive agreement to buy AirDefense for an undisclosed sum.

The mobile phone giant said AirDefense would support is ‘all-wireless’ enterprise vision by enabling it to deliver a common platform for wireless LAN protection.

The acquisition follows on from its $3.9bn (£1.95bn) purchase of wireless LAN vendor Symbol in 2006 (CRN, 19 September, 2006).

AirDefense develops wireless intrusion prevention solutions (WIPS) and software applications designed to help firms secure their networks against wireless threats and comply with regulatory and industry standards. Its technology enables secure multi-vendor environments, Motorola stressed.

Following the deal’s completion, AirDefense will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Motorola and will be integrated into Motorola’s Enterprise Mobility business.

This transaction is a tremendous opportunity for Motorola to enhance its WLAN portfolio by utilizing AirDefense’s relationships and further integrating WIPS security solutions into our WLAN infrastructure offering.”
