Midex gobbles up Central leftovers

WEEE specialist assists integrator with disposal of redundant telephony gear

Written by Sam Trendall

Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) specialist Midex has finished a stint of collecting redundant telephone equipment for integrator Central Telecom.

Central picked Midex's lockable wire roller cage service to transport obsolete gear from the integrator's offices in Burton on Trent to the recycling firm's base in Hampshire.

Once the kit arrived at Midex, it was broken down into components, with plastic then collected by a specialist recycler.

The remainder was then shredded to less than 25mm in size, with iron, steel and other ferrous material for sale extracted using an over-band magnet and stored in one-tonne bags.

What was left was passed through an eddy current separator to remove aluminium and all leftovers for smelting including wires, circuit boards and small amounts of precious metals, which are also kept in one-tonne bags.
