Tech Data buys Spanish IBM distributor

Consolidation on the continent continues apace

Written by Doug Woodburn

The pan-European IT distribution map continues to be redrawn after Tech Data revealed it is buying Spanish IBM specialist Compumedi.

Madrid-based Compumedi carries the full gamut of IBM’s solutions, including its Power Systems and System X servers, storage and software. Its 50 IBM-focused staff will join Tech Data’s networking arm, Azlan.

It is not the first time US-based Tech Data has splashed the cash in Europe in recent months, having last year acquired pan-Nordic broadliner Scribona.

But while Tech Data expands, arch-rival Ingram is retrenching, announcing last week that it is exiting broadline distribution in Denmark, Norway and Finland.

IBM welcomed Tech Data’s latest acquisition, which is expected to close in the next quarter.

Paolo Degl’Innocenti, IBM vice president South West said: “This is an exciting move by both of these IBM partners which we very much support. We expect the merger to strengthen the market presence of each party, and translate into more service and differentiation for IBM opportunities and building a stable and expandable base in a challenging market environment.”

Umberto Daniele, general manager of Compumedi, added: “The agreement with Tech Data will enable us to continue growing and developing our services to meet customer needs.”
