Micro-P extends server ambitions

Distributor broadens portfolio by partnering with Lenovo

Written by Doug Woodburn

Micro Peripherals (Micro-P) has moved to reduce its reliance on Fujitsu in the server space by forging ties with Lenovo.

The Altham-based distributor confirmed last week that it is finalising terms with Lenovo around its recently-launched ThinkServer range (Channelweb, 5 April). It currently only carries servers from Fujitsu.

Mark Kahr, vendor and marketing director at Micro-P, said: “We are a very large part of Fujitsu’s [server] business and it would be unhealthy to grow that dependence any further. We also need to give our customers choice.”

Lenovo’s largest UK distributor, Interface, has been shipping Lenovo servers in small quantities since the launch six months ago.

Rob Tomlin, business unit director at Interface, admitted that Lenovo’s server strategy needs more development and investment.

“Lenovo’s servers have a number of innovative features to enable SMEs to buy and install servers with low overheads,” he said. “But they are currently more suited to a broadliner than an x86 specialist like us.”

Lenovo was unavailable for comment at the time of going to press.
