Thesaurus saves CFS millions

IBM partner wins contract to install money and energy-saving mainframe at Co-operative Financial Services

Written by Sara Yirrell

Datacentre VAR Thesaurus will help Co-operative Financial Services (CFS) save about £2m over the next three years through a mainframe refresh.

CFS will also be able to improve performance and reduce energy, maintenance and software costs as well as increasing its system capacity, the IBM Premier partner said.

Under the deal, Thesaurus has migrated the company's database to an IBM z10 mainframe, from its old IBM z990 mainframe servers.

Ian Thompson, mainframe database manager at CFS, said: "From the very beginning of the project, we needed to deliver to tight timescales. Thanks to the expertise, commitment and continual support of Thesaurus, the system was not only delivered on time but without any major incidents.

"To cut costs and energy consumption while improving performance is an ideal solution. Thesaurus took the time to really look at our requirements and designed the perfect system. We look forward to seeing what the new mainframe can do.”

Mike Vinten, chief executive of Thesaurus, added: “Thesaurus gave CFS the best possible fit, providing significant environmental and cost savings as system capacity grows, with a very flexible and easy upgrade path.”

Gary James, head of enterprise computing at CFS said: “Taking our cost-saving agenda on board, Thesaurus has worked closely with us to reduce the cost base, limiting expenditure on the platform in the event of future upgrades.”
