The CIF argues that end users need clarity around what cloud firms do and don't offer

CIF demands cloud regulation

Newly formed body striving for code of conduct to help end users identify reputable cloud providers

Written by Caroline Donnelly

A newly formed regulatory group tasked with promoting good practice within the cloud computing sector has set its sights on laying down a code of conduct for industry members to follow.

The Cloud Industry Forum (CIF), a sub-group of FAST and Investors in Software (FAST IiS), met for the first time last week to discuss creating a code of conduct to make it easier for end users to employ reputable cloud service providers.

John Lovelock, chief executive of FAST IiS, explained: “The cloud revolution has been growing steadily for the past few years. It is now on the verge of becoming mainstream within the IT industry, encompassing a broad range of potential suppliers from ISVs to hosting companies and global brands such as Microsoft and Google.

“A major hurdle for increased adoption of the cloud by businesses is that organisations need clarity around what the service providers do and don’t offer. They also need to know what financial and operational substance there is behind these providers and what assurances are in place in regard to security, confidentiality and service levels.

“Put simply, organisations seeking to use these services need a straightforward form of certification or ‘Code of Conduct’ for potential suppliers that will accurately define the services offered and standards of operation and security.”

The CIF is currently appealing for industry members interested in helping to develop the content of the forum’s code of conduct.

Those interested in putting themselves forward should contact FAST IiS on 0845 521 8630.
