Display and monitor sales still sliding in Q3

Despite downward spiral, sales are expected to pick up again in 2010

Sales of public displays and desktop monitors across EMEA slid in Q3 but are expected to pick up, according to the latest DisplayCast data from market watcher Meko.

Andy Barker, analyst director for displays at Meko, said that both markets are still suffering from the recession but a return to growth is on the cards for 2010.

Desktop monitor sales decreased 15.7 per cent year-on-year in Q3 – although that is less than Q1’s 19.9 per cent and Q2’s 23.6 per cent year-on-year. Fifty-three per cent were consumer sales.

Third-quarter public display shipments fell 6.7 per cent year-on-year – compared with 14.7 per cent and 15.5 per cent year-on-year for Q1 and Q2 respectively. The UK had made minimal capital investment and was just emerging from recession so saw a 22.7 per cent year-on-year decline in its public display market, he said.

“[For desktop monitors], we are seeing the combination of economies in recession, the acceleration of mobile computing, delayed desktop refreshes by corporates and the arrival of new types of display form factor, such as multi-functional monitors and all-in-one PCs,” Barker said.

“Together these factors have made for a really tough time for the industry.”
