Mobile application security boost

Masabi's new offering enables phones to establish encrypted connections

Written by Phil Muncaster

Mobile applications specialist Masabi has launched a new mobile Java security application designed to provide firms with an easy way of securing payment services on their customer-facing mobile web sites, and enterprise applications accessed by mobile devices.

EncryptME enables phones to establish encrypted connections over GPRS, 3G, SMS, Wi-Fi and NFC, and because it requires only a 3KB download, can be used on most handsets, according to the firm's co-founder, Ben Whitaker.

"We have built our own self-contained security system for Java," Whitaker explained. "Because it's so small it can be bolted onto other apps to make them secure, from selling tickets to secure access of CRM systems in the field."

The software has also been built to industry standards so that the cryptography can be handled on the back-end enterprise server without the need for different security systems to be installed, said Whitaker.

Masabi is currently in discussions with banks and transport firms to extend the deployment of the technology, with more secure mobile applications set for release later this year.
