New name for Dell-EMC unveiled by Michael Dell

"As family names go, I am kind of attached to Dell," he jokes during EMC World keynote

Michael Dell has announced that the new name for the family of businesses created once the EMC acquisition closes will be Dell Technologies.

He opened the EMC World conference in Las Vegas today, updating the 10,000 customers and partners who attended about his plans for the combined business.

He said the deal is progressing well and announced the new umbrella name for Dell, EMC, VMware, Pivotal, SecureWorks, RSA and Virtustream.

"Our vision is to have a family of strategically aligned businesses - bringing together your entire infrastructure - from hardware, to software, to services - from the edge, to the core, to the cloud," he said.

"We're going to align our capabilities across our family of businesses where it makes strategic sense to deliver solutions - in areas like public, private and hybrid cloud; security; and the seamless technology infrastructure from the industry's leading converged platforms; to the sensors, PCs, virtual PCs at the edge of the internet of everything.

"In thinking about what to call our new company, we really wanted to convey a sense of being a family of business and aligned capabilities. As family names go, I am kind of attached to Dell! So in the spirit, I'd like to announce that after the close of the transaction, our family of businesses will officially be known as Dell Technologies.

"Dell Technologies will comprise the combined technologies, companies and brands of Dell, EMC Information Infrastructure, VMware, Pivotal, SecureWorks, RSA and Virtustream."

The client solutions arm of Dell Technologies will continue to be known just as Dell, while the combined enterprise unit will be known as Dell EMC, he explained, attracting applause from the audience.

"The brand equity of the Dell PC is irreplaceable and we have incredible momentum, gaining share for 13 straight quarters," he said.

"Our combined enterprise business will be named Dell EMC. Both companies stand for something very special to you, our customers. They both stand for something also very special to our teams that have been part of these businesses for decades. The combination is about bringing together the very best of both of these businesses. We're so proud of what we're creating for you and we want our whole ecosystem to feel the same sense of pride and belonging.

"It's got a nice ring to it."
