Dell outlines UK Linux plans

Two models for the UK

Written by Iain Thomson

Dell has outlined its plans to sell Linux computers in the UK.

The company will offer the Inspiron 6400n and the Inspiron 530n with Ubuntu 7.04 installed at the factory. The computers will be priced at ??329 and ??399 respectively.

The company started selling computers with Linux preinstalled in the United States this year after 30,000 members of its IdeaStorm forum requested the change. Over 100,000 people took part in follow-up testing and the company claims demand is strong.

???Dell is continuing to deliver on our commitment to give customers what they???re asking for ??? the option of choosing Linux as their operating system,??? said Charlie Tebbs, Dell's marketing director for consumer products in Europe in a statement.

???As we hear from customers throughout Europe and around the world, we will continue to explore the opportunities to expand our offerings globally, so stay tuned.???

The PCs come with full support for drivers and Dell says it is working with developers to improve them.
