Intel unveils Extreme X7900 mobile CPU

Betting its chips on mobile gaming

Written by Ian Williams

Intel has unveiled its new Core 2 Extreme X7900 mobile processor for notebook PCs at the Games Convention in Leipzig.

The dual-core mobile processor is aimed squarely at mobile gamers, and runs at an impressive 2.8GHz despite being based on the ageing 65nm die.

The X7900 will succeed its predecessor, the X7800, which was announced just last month.

With a power draw of around 45W, any notebook using this processor is going to need an impressive battery to get even a vaguely respectable running time, as it will probably include an equally powerful graphics card and a large screen.

Emphasising its target market the processor is also unlocked, meaning that it can be overclocked to even greater speeds.

The extent to which this will be possible, however, is likely to be curtailed by the heat and power constraints of a notebook chassis.
