Microsoft and its Bungie Studios gaming unit are pushing to get gamers to migrate from the original Xbox platform to the Xbox 360 this holiday season.

Microsoft is planning to throw in a copy of the hugely popular Halo 3 in an effort to tempt users of the original console over to the next-generation platform.

The offer is valid for current paid-up Xbox Live members using an original Xbox console.

Consumers have to buy an Xbox 360 between 21 November and 21 December, and move their existing Xbox Live account to an Xbox Live Gold subscription.

Halo 3 was released worldwide on 25 September and became the fastest selling video game ever. The Halo series is now one of the most successful entertainment properties in history.
