IM attacks getting more sophisticated

Latest instant messaging worms signal increased danger

Written by Guy Dixon

Attacks on instant messaging networks continue to grow in sophistication and danger, according to research covering January.

Messaging security vendor Akonix reported 14 new malicious code attacks on P2P networks, including Kazaa and eDonkey.

The company also noted the appearance of IM worms such as MSNChristmas, MSNVB, Perin and Raiodin.

In response to the attacks, Akonix security analysts issued five policy updates using dynamic IM malware, spim and protocol updates in a bid to safeguard users from the newly discovered malware, according to the company.

"Although the number of IM attacks in January 2008 is somewhat low, it does not mean that hackers have gone into hiding," said Don Montgomery, vice president of marketing at Akonix.

"Businesses should take action to prevent their networks from being compromised due to unprotected real-time communications applications in use by employees."

Further information on IM threats over January in addition to attacks going back to 2000 can be found at the Akonix Instant Messaging Security Center.
