Each year the influence of mobile communications spreads further to more aspects of people's lives

Rob Conway Chief executive, GSM Association

A host of stars, including Robert Redford, Isabella Rossellini, Bollywood actress Sherlyn Chopra and Black Eyed Peas front man 'Will.i.am', turned out for the annual GSM Association awards last night.

The award for best handset went to Sony Ericsson for its W910 Walkman Phone, and 3UK's Skypephone won a Highly Commended award. UK firm Omnifone won the award for best music service.

In a month of bad news for Yahoo there was a moment of brightness when the company won the award for best mobile news and entertainment portal, while Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6 won best enterprise product.

Rob Conway, chief executive at the GSM Association, said: "Each year the influence of mobile communications spreads further to more aspects of people's lives, and the scope of the Awards become greater, and the competition more intense.

"Many of tonight's winners reflect that premise, and as we celebrate 20 years since the foundations for global mobile communication were laid, they demonstrate not only how far we have come, but the limitless possibilities of where innovation and inspiration can take us in the years ahead."

Other awards went to myGamma.com for the best mobile social networking site, Call of the Pharaoh scooped the best mobile game prize and the GSMA Chairman's Award went to Sunil Bharti Mittal, founder of Bharti Enterprises, one of India's leading telecoms groups.
