Context examines shelf space of the top five processors in the retail market in the UK, France, the Netherlands and Germany.
xt examines shelf space of the top five processors in the retail market in the UK, France, the Netherlands and Germany.
UK
PROCESSOR Q3 98
K6 233 13.1
Pentium MMX 233 12.4
Pentium II 333 11.8
Pentium II 266 11.3
Pentium II 300 11.3
Other 40.1
(C) CONTEXT RetailWatch 1998
The Pentium II 266 has experienced rapid growth in the UK since April and by the end of July accounted for a quarter of all processors sold in the business sector.
The Pentium MMX 233 has managed to keep its market share, mostly at the expense of lower speed MMX chips. Sales of the Pentium II 300 are starting to pick up, reaching almost 10 per cent at the end of July. In the UK retail market, 25 per cent of the shelf space in Q3 is occupied by relatively slow PCs such as 233MHz.
France
PROCESSOR Q3 98
Pentium MMX 233 21.6
Pentium II 266 14.2
Pentium MMX 200 11.0
Pentium II 300 10.6
Pentium II 233 10.4
(C) CONTEXT RetailWatch 1998
As in the UK, Pentium II 266 sales have increased rapidly in France, reaching more than 27 per cent market share in July. The Pentium MMX 200 is still the second best selling processor in France's business channel, but will soon be replaced by the 233 MMX chip.
Slower chips dominate the French retail market, with the Pentium MMX 200 and 233 accounting for one third of the processors found in stores.
The fastest processor, the Pentium II 300, occupies only 10 per cent of shelf space.
Netherlands
PROCESSOR Q3 98
Pentium II 266 12.9
Pentium MMX 233 10.3
Pentium II 300 9.6
Pentium II 350 8.7
Pentium II 333 7.6
(C) CONTEXT RetailWatch 1998
Sales of the Pentium II 300 are increasing rapidly in the Netherlands. Intel's Celeron 266 has become one of the top five processors sold in the business sector, reaching almost eight per cent market share in July.
The Pentium II is prominent in the Netherlands' retail market, with the Pentium II accounting for four of the top five processors.
Germany
PROCESSOR Q3 98
Pentium II 300 18.3
Pentium II 266 13.2
Celeron 266 8.5
Pentium MMX 233 8.4
Pentium II 350 7.1
(C) CONTEXT RetailWatch 1998
The Pentium II 266 claims a higher market share in the German business sector than in other countries, reaching more than 36 per cent of all sales in July. Pentium MMX chips with lower speeds are still very present in this sector as well.
In the retail channel, high-performance chips (Pentium II 300 and 350) are taking more than a quarter of the shelf space in Germany.
