Intel's Pentium MMX 233MHz processor is the UK market leader with 35 per cent market share, more than 10 per cent more than the second place processor, the Mobile Pentium II 266MHz.

The Mobile Pentium II 266MHz, however, looks set to overtake the Pentium MMX 233 in the next quarter. The MMX chip peaked in September 1998 with almost 50 per cent market share, whereas the Mobile Pentium II 266 is steadily gaining market share.

Overall, the Mobile Pentium II is replacing the older MMX processors.

In spite of losing 10 per cent market share since the August peak, Intel's Pentium MMX 233MHz chip is still the number one processor in Germany with almost one-third of market share.

The older, slower MMX chips still feature in the German top 10. Processors with speeds below 200MHz account for about 16 per cent of the market.

The Mobile Pentium II processors are steadily replacing the MMX models.

The 233MHz and 266MHz Mobile PII chips hold third and fourth place, respectively.

The Pentium MMX 233MHz processor is the clear market leader in France, with 43 per cent share.

The latest Mobile Pentium II processors have a strong footing in France and are gaining ground. The Mobile Pentium II 233MHz and 266MHz processors have a total market share of 34 per cent.

Also featuring in the top 10 is the G3 processor, used by Apple. This accounts for about three per cent of market share. The French market is the only one in which Apple has gained a presence.

The Pentium MMX 233MHz is the number one processor in the Netherlands, with more than half the total market share in the notebook business sector.

Intel's Mobile Pentium II processors are becoming more popular - combined market share of the 233MHz, 266MHz and the recently launched 300MHz processor is about 27 per cent for October 1998.

AMD's K6 266MHz processor, used in Compaq's consumer Presario notebook, also features in the top 10.
