Context looks at the top 10 vendors in the third quarter of PC shipments in the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Italy.

Compaq maintains first place in the UK market once again with 22.1 per
cent market share and 44.4 per cent year-on-year growth.
Dell is performing well and is in a stable second position behind Compaq
with 13.3 per cent market share and with a healthy 58 per cent growth.

The Packard-Bell/NEC group, traditionally very strong in France, has had
another good quarter with 51.9 percent growth, due especially to the SoHo
and consumer sales.
Toshiba has been losing market share in the French market and had a
negative year-on-year growth in this quarter (-13.1 per cent).
Dell and Fujitsu display a strong year-on-year growth of more than 100 per
cent.
GERMANY

Siemens clearly leads in Germany with more than 15 per cent market share
and a year-on-year growth of 38 per cent, which is twice the average
market growth.
Compaq has climbed to second position with nine per cent market share,
overtaking Fujitsu, which has been losing market share in Germany since
the first quarter where it held second position with a 12 per cent market
share.
Apple is strengthening its position and displays a healthy 65.4 per cent
year-on-year growth.
NETHERLANDS

Compaq/Digital still accounts for almost a third of the units shipped this
quarter despite the fact that combined growth is seven points under the
total growth in the Netherlands.
Dell and Packard Bell/NEC show spectacular growth rates this quarter, both
showing an increase of more than 250 per cent.
IBM's fifth position is due to a negative growth of -11 per cent.

Compaq is once again leading the Italian market with 16.4 per cent market
share although its year-on-year growth (14.4 per cent) is lower than that
of the Italian market.
Siemens and IBM's year-on-year growth of more than 80 per cent in the
Italian market greatly out-performed the average market growth.
