Golf Day 2010 goes with a swing

Thunder and lightning failed to stop a great day's play, says Sara Yirrell

Champion golfers: Proximity Communications had the victorious team at Foxhills this year

Hardy channel golfers ignored the forecast of heavy rain on CRN Golf Day to make it the most successful one to date. With 29 teams taking part at Foxhills golf course in Surrey, the day proved a big hit and even the weather played ball.

After one heavy downpour complete with thunder and lightning, the skies cleared to leave players bathed in sunshine for the remainder of the day. The event kicked off with bacon butties in the clubhouse, followed by a shotgun start on the club’s Longcross Course.

A three-course lunch was served upon completion of the competition, followed by the awards presentations.

The winning team was Proximity Communications, with Dell coming in second and Ricohthird. David Lilywhite scooped the nearest-the-pin trophy on the 4th hole, and Danny Kirby won the longest drive on the 12th hole.

Headline sponsor Computerlinks was pleased with the day. Dave Ellis, director of new technology and services at the specialist distributor, said: “The feedback we have had from our customers was great, because they had a good chance to do some networking as well as playing golf. The course was in really good condition and I would say it was quite a challenging one to play.

“Considering the number of people playing, it went really smoothly and we had absolutely no hold-up at all. It felt like millionaire’s golf – it seemed there was nobody else on the course.

“Unfortunately I didn’t have the best round -- but in my defence I am only just starting to learn to play.”

Darren Boyce, chief executive of Proximity Communications, said: “Events s uch as the CRN Golf Day are an important part of the channel calendar.

“Bringing the channel community together in an environment where people can network, build relationships and do business has a lot of value. Incorporate this in a golf event and you have the perfect environment that exemplifies many of the channel’s core attributes – intense rivalry, fierce competition and fair play. We are delighted to have won and look forward to defending our title next year.”

Mark Burton, CRN’s publisher, said: “The course was in superb condition and there was some great golf. I was pleased with my round, especially my approach to the 7th green that landed inches from the hole thanks to some help from the trees.

“I would like to thank our headline sponsor Computerlinks and sponsor Comms-care, and also to say well done to all the winners. It was definitely our most successful golf day yet.”
