Context looks at the performance of hardware vendors selling portables in corporate resellers in the last two quarters.
US

The top three manufacturers account for 82.3 per cent of corporate resellers. Toshiba and Compaq are fighting for second position.
IBM leads by 14 per cent, after growing by 12.6 per cent over the six-month period. Toshiba's share fell by 2.6 points and Compaq's by three.
Apple's share has fallen below two per cent.
UK

The top three manufacturers account for 88.1 per cent of the corporate market.
Toshiba sold twice as many portables as IBM over the past six months, peaking at 52.5 per cent in March. Toshiba usually accounts for more than 45 per cent of the segment. IBM is steady, with approximately 25 per cent share among resellers, while Compaq's share varies between 15 and 20 per cent.
Germany

The top three vendors account for 91.1 per cent of the channel's sales of portables.
IBM sold almost twice as many machines in January as its challenger, Toshiba. By March, Toshiba had overtaken IBM, but Compaq had taken over the number one spot and in April the difference in market share between IBM and Toshiba had fallen to less than four per cent.
Italy

The top three vendors own only slightly more than two-thirds of resellers' sales, making Italy the most fragmented reseller market.
IBM gained 8.2 percentage points, ending up with 21.1 per cent in April. Toshiba leads, with more than 25 per cent in April. Texas Instruments is fading fast - its share dropped from, 20.5 per cent in November 1997 to 3.4 per cent in April.
France

The top three vendors sold more than 87.3 per cent of the portables that went through resellers over the six-month period.
Toshiba is way ahead of its rivals in France, with half the market, compared with Compaq's 21.3 per cent and IBM's 16 per cent. Toshiba has always maintained a share of more than 40 per cent and was up to 54.5 per cent in February.
Compaq almost doubled its share, from approximately 15 per cent in January to nearly 30 per cent in April.
