CRT TV sales are on the decline

The latest iSuppli research shows that even though they will dominate world shipments in the coming years, sales will decline in 2005 for the first time ever.

The speed of decline will then pick up as flat panel TVs take over. Between 2005 and 2009, CRTs will go from an 84 per cent market share to 57 per cent. They will account for less than half of all sales by 2010.

Although there are some CRT High Definition (HD) TVs on the market in the US it is unlikely that they will make a big splash in the UK. There are certainly some ‘slim’ CRTs capable of supporting some HDTV content out there but the UK market for HDTV seems destined to go hand-in-hand with flat-panels.

According to EICTA, roughly 12 per cent of all televisions sold are flat panel devices. This figure is expected to grow to 50 per cent by 2008 and by that time, all flat panel TVs will be HD-Ready.
