Contrary to market movement in France, Germany and Netherlands, Toshiba has lost a considerable portion of UK share. However, it is still the market leader.
IBM witnessed 60 per cent growth during the May-October period of 1998, due to aggressive price cutting of up to one-third on its notebook models in August. Market share increased from 15 to 25 per cent in four months.
Compaq's notebook share of the UK business sector also grew during the latter half of 1998. Its market share averages at 13 per cent.

Toshiba continues to hold the greatest market share in Germany for notebooks. The company witnessed almost 10 per cent growth between May and October.
Compaq's share of the business notebook sector also grew considerably, from 10 to nearly 18 per cent during the same period. Together with Toshiba's growth, this has had a negative impact on the market share of 'Other' brands.
IBM's sudden increase in market share was due to enhancements to all the ThinkPad families during the months of July and August.

Toshiba dominates the French notebook market for the business sector.
It holds just over half of the market share.
Price reductions on Hewlett Packard's OmniBook - accounted for by the four per cent increase in market share in the 'Other' category - was partly responsible for Toshiba's drop in market share during August and September.
Compared to UK, Germany and Netherlands, the French notebook market was quite stable during the May to October period.
Netherlands
MARKET SHARE (%) MAY-OCT
TOSHIBA 53.07
IBM 3.99

As in France, Toshiba is the clear leader in the Netherlands with more than 50 per cent of market share in the notebook business sector.
The noticeable September leap of 11 to 62 per cent was due to channel stock clearance on the end-of-life Satellite Pro 400 model.
Compaq, meanwhile, lost about seven per cent of its market share during the May to October period of 1998.
Acer, which witnessed strong growth in the Netherlands during the six-month period, accounts for more than half of the 'Other' category.
