Leaders' debate - my humble opinion

History was in the making last night with the first ever leaders' debate between the big three political parties.

I have to say there were times when I had to force myself to stay focused during the 90-minute show - but it was compelling TV.

As all the polls this morning seem to reflect - Nick Clegg won the debate hands down - although like the Lib Dem's manifesto I personally worry that some of his comments lacked substance. He did put in a good performance though and came across as fairly likeable and genuine.

David Cameron remained calm and focused throughout - despite a number of increasingly desperate attacks by Gordon Brown.

I would agree that Gordon Brown was the loser. He appeared uncomfortable throughout and was quite rude and arrogant the way he constantly tried to speak over his rivals. His attempts to get Nick Clegg onside were quite amusing - I would say that failed quite spectacularly. His goading of Cameron also made him look slightly ridiculous - like a school bully who wanted to get his way.

It was also quite amusing to watch Gordon's face when Cameron mentioned the massively wasteful NHS IT debacle and also the ID card scheme which so far has seen billions pumped into both initatives with very little return.

I did think the questions could have been harder hitting and the lack of response from the audience was an interesting twist - they had obviously been threatened by the producers that if they made a single sound after any of the comments, that they would be ejected from the studio.

Each one tried to outdo the other with tales of the people they had met and the comments they had made - but at times it just appeared too much like tit for tat. "We are the politicians of the people" they screamed through their actions.

I'm not sure if I liked the studio set up either - as several people pointed out - it was very much like a gameshow. I kept expecting one of the three to hit their buzzers and win £10,000 or something.

But all in all it was an interesting experience and I will definitely be watching the next one in the hope that some harder hitting questions will be asked and the debate will liven up even more once they get into their stride.

Has it helped me make up my mind? Not really.
