Protesting

As students take to the streets for a second time I wonder if commuters should do the same?

Students taking to the streets for a second time this month are causing chaos in some parts of London today, as anger over proposed fee hikes drives them over the edge.

I was one of the lucky generation that didn't have to pay tuition fees - although my poor parents had to supplement my living costs - so it would be very easy for me to say put up and shut up.

However, violence and destruction is not the answer - so I hope lessons have been learned from the last protests which descended into complete chaos.

But the thing I am thinking about more and more is why don't beleagured commuters start protesting about the absolutely disgusting rail fare hikes coming next year?

Thanks to the government - and I really mean a big THANKS (you bunch of muppets) we are faced with 30 per cent increases in fare over the next three years. Brilliant.

I think we are ripped off so badly for a service that is shoddy, late, unreliable and generally absolute crap. Yet year on year they get away with it because we are over a barrel.

We really do need to get some sort of action going - because without the thousands of commuters pouring into the capital each day, many businesses would find it very difficult to function.

Yet we as private sector employees are faced with low or non-existent pay increases, rising inflation and train fares that are set to sky rocket.

Something has to give.

Commuters should not be taking this lying down - we need to fight for our rights over greedy shareholders and fat cat rail franchise bosses.

Who is with me?
