International women's day
Another excuse for people to pontificate about how things need to change in... [insert subject here] blah blah blah
So today is 'International Women's Day'.
Some of my loyal readers (I think I have at least one - mum?) will remember my rant about women in IT a few weeks ago.
What exactly is the point of an international day of anything? Who decided that today was the day for women?
I understand there is a men's day and also a children's day - although as my parents used to say to me - "every day is children's day". Groan.
What does this achieve exactly?
Yes women have achieved some wonderful things over the years, and so have men. And some children really do stand out from the crowd. For that we are truly grateful and they deservedly received recognition at the time. Now what?
All it seems to be to me is a good excuse for people in our industry to bang on about women in IT, and how women are not on the board of directors at many firms.
But to be realistic - women have only just started to be more prominent in business over the last few decades - before that many of them stayed at home bringing up the family.
That is just a fact of life, which is now changing at a rapid pace.
Also many women may just not be interested in working in IT and have chosen other careers. So what?
I still believe that jobs/positions etc are earned on merit and it really doesn't matter whether you are male/female, green/blue, black/white, yellow/red.....it should be down to your ability to do a job.
Now, where is that brick wall? I need to bang my head against it.
