The following analysis tracks the development of shelf space by brandthin the retail channel from July to December 1997. from July 1997 until December 1997 within the retail channel. PCs were tracked at a product level. The results have been analysed to show how brand shelf space in these retailers has evolved. Shelf space values are calculated as a percentage of the total shelf space occupied by those brands. Only branded PCs were included in the analysis. Data was gathered on walk-in store checks.
Apple and Packard Bell's shelf space decreased significantly during the last two quarters of 1997. However, Packard Bell remained number one in terms of shelf space.
AST dropped out of the retail channel in Q4 after the manufacturer pulled out of the market.
Compaq, Hewlett Packard and Fujitsu were the winners, while other manufacturers remained stable.
