3Com is to offer resellers competitive discounting for its new Gigabit Ethernet switches.
The new Switch 7700 four-slot chassis and 20-port Gigabit modules will be offered to 3Com Gold and Silver partners at "preferential rates". The move is designed to allow VARs to target high-performance LANs in the government and education sectors.
Charles Gallagher, director of product management at 3Com, said certified partners that have received training will provide the switches to enterprises as the backbone to a campus network.
Gallagher added that resellers that had not received training can sell the product alongside 3Com engineering services. He claimed VARs can "make significantly better margins" than those of Cisco by selling 3Com products.
John Pateman, network and telecoms sales manager at Compusys, said: "3Com has to work hard to get back into the enterprise and is offering high-performance, cost-effective switches."
