GTE will lay off 1,500 workers in a restructure that includes selling off unprofitable operations and cutting $500 million in annual costs.
The company said it would take a first quarter after-tax charge of $802 million. GTE was criticised by some analysts after it lost its bid for MCI to WorldCom.
