Leeds-based systems integrator ESS has become a direct Compaq reseller amid accusations that Digital had been hiving off server business for its own direct sales team.
ESS has a long-standing relationship as a Digital reseller, and the Compaq deal comes after one source described Digital's channel as being volatile and unpredictable.
David Hulme, sales director at ESS, described the difficulties the reseller faced when dealing with Digital. 'The problem with Digital is that it likes to take server business away and handle it directly through one of its various business units. Naturally, this has caused us problems in the past when some of the business we were expecting to do suddenly disappeared and went in Digital's direction.'
A Compaq representative said that ESS had the right skills and experience to give the company a significant presence in the NT server market.
Hulme went on to say: 'We can now supply wider markets than before as it is useful to have an alternative to the Digital range.'
No one from Digital was available to comment at press time.
