In a bid to break the log-jam caused by BT's pricing of ISDN, 3Com/Sonix and systems integrator Enterprise IT are offering a bundle that includes basic ISDN installation for u275.
The catch of the promotion, which is aimed at users, is that they have to buy a 3Com/Sonix router, priced from u995. Despite this, 3Com/Sonix believes the promotion is a winner because users are fed up with the high cost of BT's ISDN.
'BT's cost of u400 per line is too high,' said 3Com/Sonix marketing director Tim Pickard. 'It is an obstacle to the UK high-speed networking market taking off.' The bundling deal has been arranged by Manchester-based Enterprise IT and is available through North West service provider Norweb. Pickard said that if the promotion is successful other dealers might follow suit with promotions through local cable companies.
Pickard said the cost of the ISDN line would not affect the margin on the routers. Under the BT charter it has to provide all customers with a service at the same cost, and cannot provide loss-leader bundling deals.
