With the lingering impact of the recession, the dawn of various hot new technologies and the usual fights, friendships and comings and goings in this most incestuous of industries, 2010 was certainly a year to remember in the channel.
In the first of two-part round-up, we run through the biggest stories of this year for the reseller, distributor and vendor communities.
The beginning of the year was marked by VARs' troubles with product availability. Back in February, ChannelWeb broke news of Cisco lead times stretching out to almost six months.
Other trends to dominate the reseller market in 2010 including top integrators' battle for cloud supremacy, the increased use of outsourcing and the rising cost of product.
The spectre of the recession continued to haunt some, with a number of recognisable resellers going under in 2010. The Apple channel suffered more than its fair share of woe, with both The Adventi Group and Computer Warehouse hitting the wall.
Comms VAR Qubic Ltd also bit the dust this year, while cashflow problems forced HP partner Quadnet to sell off its hardware business. Embattled integrator Redstone was luckier and survived the storm as an £8.5m cash injection in August shored up its balance sheet.
ChannelWeb kept a close eye on the distributor community this year and, in August, launched our Spotlight on Distribution campaign with a rundown of the 25 biggest disties in the UK. Throughout the rest of the year, we ran a series of features looking at the major trends in the distribution arena.
In April, the distribution arena was hit particularly hard by the Icelandic volcano crisis, with deliveries impacted and staff left stranded overseas.
Elsewhere, familiar themes cropped up, with the big four US disties - Ingram Micro, Tech Data, Arrow and Avnet - apprearing increasingly aggressive.
But the specialist players repeatedly showed they could be equally bullish. Computerlinks led the value-add charge with the bold claim that it can more than double its EBITDA margins to 10 per cer cent inside five years.
The big story during the latter half of the year was the fallout of Avnet's acquisition of rival Bell Micro. Early in the process, senior Bell figures were handed prominent roles in the new set-up and promised other Bell alumni would be given important positions. But when ChannelWeb broke news that Bell's European headquarters in Chessington is to be closed, a number of onlookers expressed their shock.
Conflict was the watchword for the vendor landscape this year, with HP and Cisco's ongoing face-off being the most high profile dust-up. The set-to reached new heights in February when the networking vendor was unceremoniously booted off its rival's partner programme.
And Cisco was not the only vendor to attract HP's ire this year. Recent weeks have seen the vendor become engaged in a vituperative war of words with Oracle boss Larry Ellison.
The security channel also witnessed its share of disagreements this year, with price rises from vendors Websense, Sonicwall and Barracuda attracting fierce criticism from rivals.
Elsewhere, numerous top vendors had an eye on revamping their routes to market, with the prolonged saga of Oracle's quest to finalise its distribution line-up running throughout the summer. The vendor finally settled on Arrow and Avnet.
Cisco was also in the mood for a distribution shake-up in 2010, and made its first western European additions for seven years in the shape of Magirus and Micro Peripherals.
But many vendors were more keen to rationalise bloated distribution line-ups, with McAfee, Websense, Citrix and Avaya all terminating relationships with distributors.
