Nearly seven out of 10 microbusiness owners in IT admit to having taken a business call in the toilet, according to a new poll.
Some 166 owners of firms with between one and nine staff in the IT industry were quizzed on their phone habits as part of the research, which was commissioned by call handling vendor Penelope.
Sixty-nine per cent conceded they had picked up the phone during a call of nature to avoid missing out on new business.
Nearly one in five (19 per cent) said they had taken a business call at a funeral, and 12 per cent at a wedding.
With new business leads found to be worth an average of £142 a day, Penelope co-founder Ed Reeves argued it is unsurprising that IT business owners are going to such extreme lengths to avoid missing business calls.
"When it comes to attracting and winning business, responsiveness is everything. A consumer is unlikely to chase a business to buy something from them; it is far more likely that they will simply call someone else."
Having said that, IT business owners' penchant for picking up the phone in inappropriate places appears to be no different from any other sector. Penelope's survey quizzed 2,000 microbusiness owners in total, with 70 per cent, 18 per cent and 13 per cent admitting to taking a call in the toilet, at a funeral and at a wedding, respectively.
And in a reminder that Penelope's survey is essentially a fairly naked sales pitch, Reeves added: "There are a number of ways that a microbusiness can mitigate against missing these calls – which also means that they can go to the toilet in peace!"
